How to Spot an AI-Operated Site

Check for a real "About Us" or masthead. Legitimate outlets list named editors, reporters, and a physical address. AI slop sites often have no staff page, or generic bios with stock-photo headshots that show up on other sites too.
Look at publishing volume and range. A site posting dozens of stories a day across every topic imaginable — with no real specialization — is a hallmark of an AI content farm, not a newsroom.
Watch for flat, formulaic writing. AI-generated articles tend to read generically: repetitive sentence structures, vague sourcing ("reports suggest"), and boilerplate phrasing recycled across unrelated stories.
Check the domain's age and footprint. Newly registered domains with generic, authoritative-sounding names (mimicking "county," "tribune," or "national" news) and few if any backlinks are a red flag.
See if anyone else is reporting the story. If a "breaking" story appears only on one obscure site with no pickup elsewhere, treat it as unverified.
Search the site itself. A quick search for the site's name plus "AI-generated" or "fake news" often surfaces whether it's already been flagged by fact-checkers or researchers like NewsGuard.
