Spotting a pink slime site
Follow the money. Check the About page for who owns and funds the site. Real outlets disclose it; pink slime sites stay vague or say nothing.
Look for real reporters. Missing bylines, generic staff names, or writers with no footprint outside the site are red flags.
Watch for a network. Pink slime sites often come in batches — near-identical designs and templates under different local-sounding names.
Read past the headlines. Thin, templated local items padding out a steady stream of one-sided political coverage suggests an agenda, not a newsroom.
Check for a local track record. Established outlets have a physical address, a history in the community, and coverage of more than just politics.
