How to Spot a Fake News Screenshot

The fake articles are the creation of the Russian Matryoshka operation, which impersonates credible news outlets to spread anti-Ukraine false claims.

Here's what to look for:

Check the typography & formatting

Real outlets have consistent font sizes, line spacing, and byline styles. Fakes often have mismatched fonts, awkward line breaks, or wrong logo treatments.

Search for the article directly

Paste the headline into Google and add the outlet name. If the article doesn't appear on the outlet's actual website, it almost certainly doesn't exist.

Verify the date and URL

Look for a visible URL or date in the screenshot. Fabricated screenshots often omit these, or display a URL that doesn't match the outlet's actual domain.

Reverse image search the screenshot

Upload the image to Google Images or TinEye. If the screenshot appears across Telegram channels or fringe sites but not news databases, it's likely fake.

Be skeptical of claims that seem too dramatic
